Getting Started

The pseudo terminal on this page reproduces the feel of "Cisco IOS," the operating system used on Cisco switches and routers. It needs no installation — you can start practicing right away. If you want to practice on something closer to the real thing, here are your options.

  • Cisco Packet Tracer: a free simulator from the Cisco Networking Academy that lets you place and configure virtual network devices.
  • GNS3: a free tool for building more full-fledged virtual environments of network equipment.
  • Certification study guides: CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) textbooks are a great way to learn device configuration commands systematically.
